Grapaow Pla (Dried Fish Maw Soup) Street Food Sukhumvit Soi 77/1 by On Nut BTS Phil in Bangkok

www.PhilinBangkok.com Grapaow pla, กระเพาะปลา, is the air bladder of a fish. It is fried to preserve it, and it is soaked in water to reconstitute it. See my Chinatown video and you will see the huge amounts of this dried stomach they sell. The 40 baht $1.35 soup I ordered was wonderful. It was piping hot with chunks of tender crab meat, slightly sour strips of bamboo shoots, gelatinous pieces of the fish maw, slices of chinese mushrooms, and a whole hard-boiled quail egg. It was topped with freshly chopped cilantro and two teaspoons of a vinegary chili sauce. Stop, don't run away! Although this dish is normally made with fish stomachs, Thais also make it with fried pork rind, the kind you can find as a snack next to crisps (chips) in your local supermarket. It's not particularly unusual to see odd parts of fish used in soups, think of shark fin soup in Chinese cuisine, so this dish is not as strange as it may seem, but still, if fish stomach puts you off, use pork rind gratons instead. Another item you may not be familar with is Maggi sauce, this is a Nestlé made dark seasoning sauce that is very popular in Thailand and is available worldwide. The soup is similar to a Chinese Hot and Sour soup. The liquid is thick, and it is almost "stew-like". It is so good! The Thai massage I had at the place I spoke is 100 baht per hr yes folks thats $3.33 hr ! I had a 1.5hr session and the small lady had hands of steel getting the knots out of my back. You get a loyalty card aswell ...
